Veeam just shipped version 13.1 of the Veeam Data Platform, and if you've been running Proxmox VE in your environment, this is the release you've been waiting for. Veeam has moved Proxmox from "supported" to genuinely first-class, closing the gap with VMware and Hyper-V almost entirely. Alongside the Proxmox work, 13.1 also brings more than 70 new features across identity resilience, cyber resilience, and AI-driven operations.
Proxmox VE Gets a Major Upgrade
The headline update is the new Veeam Plug-in for Proxmox VE 4.0, which unlocks capabilities Proxmox admins have been asking for since Veeam first added support for the platform:
Native VM replication. Proxmox VE now supports true host-to-host replication without requiring shared storage, replication across datacenters, and replication between different storage types. This brings real disaster recovery capability to Proxmox environments, not just backup.
Instant VM Recovery. You can now spin up a workload directly from a backup and run it in place while you migrate it back to production storage at your own pace. This is currently under Experimental Support in 13.1, but it's a big step toward minutes-not-hours recovery for Proxmox VMs.
Cross-platform VM restores with automatic VirtIO injection. Restoring a VM from VMware, Hyper-V, or another supported platform into Proxmox now automatically injects VirtIO drivers, sets the SCSI controller to VirtIO SCSI Single, configures disks and NIC correctly, and installs the QEMU Guest Agent. In plain terms: migrating VMs onto Proxmox just got a lot less painful.
Full Web UI management. Proxmox backup jobs, restores, and infrastructure are now managed through the same Veeam Web UI experience as VMware and Hyper-V, including detailed restore progress and statistics.
VLAN tagging on restore. You can now assign VLAN tags to worker VMs and restored VMs, which matters a lot if you're migrating into an environment that relies on traditional VLAN segmentation.
Role-based access control. Custom roles can now be scoped to specific VMs, jobs, categories, or infrastructure objects for Proxmox — also under Experimental Support in this release, but a meaningful step toward tighter access governance.
Expanded malware detection. Proxmox workloads now get broader coverage under Veeam's malware detection engine.
Proxmox environments also inherit some platform-wide improvements worth calling out: a unified, FIPS- and DISA STIG-compliant worker image, backup mapping, and configurable backup windows.
Beyond Proxmox: The Rest of 13.1
Even if you're not running Proxmox, this release has plenty to like:
Automated Active Directory forest recovery. Since AD compromise is often the pivot point for domain-wide ransomware attacks, Veeam now automatically collects and preserves the forest metadata needed for a clean rebuild as part of the normal backup process — instead of leaving that painstaking work for the middle of an active incident.
Veeam Threat Hunter gets sharper. Signature-based detection and support for custom YARA rules mean you can now hunt for specific malware artifacts and validate recovery points before restoring, cutting the risk of reinfecting production.
Post-quantum cryptography and hybrid FIPS support. Veeam is aligning with NIST post-quantum standards, getting ahead of the encryption curve before it becomes a compliance requirement.
AI that actually does something. Veeam Intelligence is moving from an assistant that answers questions to an agent that investigates and acts, with inline AI-powered entropy analysis and Indicators of Compromise scanning running in real time as data is backed up.
Expanded threat detection. Malware scanning now covers NAS, and cloud threat detection has been extended to Azure workloads.
What This Means for You
If Proxmox has been part of your virtualization strategy but you've held off on treating it as a first-tier platform for DR, 13.1 changes the calculus. Native replication and instant recovery bring Proxmox meaningfully closer to what VMware and Hyper-V admins have had for years. And the identity and cyber resilience upgrades across the board are a reminder that backup software in 2026 isn't just about restoring files, it's about surviving a ransomware event with your Active Directory, your recovery points, and your sanity intact.
